We are team-oriented professionals, balancing technical knowledge and experience with the requirements of each project. We are committed to continuing education, providing mentorship and giving back to the community. We stay informed of emerging trends in energy efficiency and green building technology, have incorporated building science research into our practice, and provide accurate, up-to-date information for our clients and building industry peers. We are a small, women-owned business (SBE/WBE).
THE IN BALANCE GREEN CONSULTING TEAM
Andrea (Andy) Pease, Architect and LEED Accredited Professional, and Jennifer Rennick, Architect and Certified Energy Analyst, discovered their shared passion for providing a balanced approach to sustainable design and began working together in 2005. They formalized their joint venture in the spring of 2008, and In Balance Green Consulting was established. The company has grown over the years to include new team members and expanded services. Together, our expertise and diverse backgrounds have enabled us to broaden our impact on the built environment, strengthened by our core values of "Excellence, Balance, and Leadership".
Andrea (Andy) Pease, AIA, LEED AP
Andy, both an Architect and LEED Accredited Professional, is skilled and experienced in a wide range of green building practices.
Her current focus lies in optimizing green building strategies, including LEED administration and certification services, and water conservation strategies. Bringing together integrated design, daylight and water use analysis, low impact development, energy efficiency, materials selections, and other strategies, she has helped dozens of clients through a green building process, whether their goal was to achieve LEED Certification or maximize on their building's efficiencies.
Andy is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); she is an active leader in the Central Coast Green Building Council (a merger of USGBC-C4 and SLO Green Build) and the AIA Central Coast Chapter. Andy also serves as Council Member for the City of San Luis Obispo.
Jennifer Rennick, aia, CEA
Jennifer, both an Architect and a Certified Energy Analyst, specializes in energy use optimization, including passive solar design, whole building energy use, zero net energy, and energy modeling and analysis.
Through her careful analysis of all building components (including lighting and mechanical systems, daylighting, glass and window options, insulation and thermal mass), she consistently helps her clients achieve high energy efficiency, increased occupant comfort, and lower utility costs.
A graduate from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Jennifer passionately shares her knowledge and expertise through presentations, workshops, and award-winning articles.
Michelle Zimney, LEED AP BD+C
Michelle brings a decade of experience as a consultant to her work in green building. Skilled in project management, she works with both residential and commercial clients to implement sustainable design and construction strategies, with the goal of maximizing resource efficiency and creating healthy spaces in which to live and work. Past projects include mixed-use, multi-family residential, new commercial, and government construction.
Michelle is a graduate of Stanford University and is active in local green building organizations. She is currently serving as the Santa Barbara regional co-chair for the Central Coast Green Building Council and is Past President of the organization. She has also taught for UCSB Extension's Green Building and Sustainable Design program.
Grant Murphy, Energy ANALYST and LEED Technician
Grant’s passion for green building and energy analysis, combined with a love of number crunching and technology, guides his focus on energy analysis software, Zero Net Energy design, water reduction strategies, and green certification programs. As a project manager he is as comfortable behind the scenes, modeling the most energy efficient options or completing LEED certification documents, as he is talking best practices and design process with a client.
Grant is a graduate of Sonoma State's Environmental Studies and Planning Department, with a B.S. degree in Energy Management and Design.
Mike Horgan, CPHC, CSLB #1039516
Mike is a licensed builder in both California and Massachusetts, as well as a certified Passive House Consultant. Mike has worked in the construction field for more than 25 years having begun framing homes at the age of 17. For 13 years he owned and operated his own design-build firm on Cape Cod specializing in energy-efficient new construction and renovations, and he has many zero-energy builds to his name. Mike specializes in bringing building practices, methods, and theories to real-life applications for architects, designers, and other builders. He focuses on life-cycle cost analysis of materials and applications; waterproofing, airtightness, vapor and insulation detailing; and the construct-ability of assemblies as cohesive packages. He is a graduate of Worcester University in MA with degrees in Economics and Finance, and Boston University with post-graduate degrees in Education and Linguistics. He is an active member of the San Luis Obispo Climate Coalition, within which he leads the Building Decarbonization team working towards carbon-neutral design and construction of businesses and homes.
